Penang FA’s Assistant Manager Nazim Ariff has heaped praises on Faiz Subri after his two-goal show against Pahang FA helped them clinch a 4-1 win last night.
While playing a central role in a key win is a big deal , Faiz also went viral on the internet for another reason – he netted an incredible free-kick that was Roberto Carlos-esque in many ways.
The bigger picture here though, is Penang’s astounding team performance and while everyone played a crucial part en route to earning it, Nazim acknowledged that Faiz is a key asset.
“It [winning] feels awesome as we’ve always wanted to show everyone that we have the ability to be among the top teams in Malaysia,” he told FourthOfficial.com
“And of course, the free-kick was world-class. Faiz is a very important player for us. We relied on him heavily last season and hopefully he’ll be able to help us achieve our targets in 2016.
Some of the biggest media outlets have picked up on footage of the goal, and he’s even being strongly linked with a nomination for the Puskas Award.
As a result, Penang FA organized a special press conference earlier today, where it was announced that the jersey he wore last night would be auctioned off. Profits from the auction would be channeled into Penang FA’s development funds.
Faiz also made a public appearance during the presser, where he claimed that the goal wasn’t a fluke attempt – something that was strongly echoed by Nazim.
“I’ve not personally seen him do it before, but Faiz always stays back after training to practice free-kick by himself. So I’m not surprised, really,” he concluded.
