British number one Heather Watson suffered a first round exit at the Family Circle Cup after she was defeated by Croatia’s Donna Vekic in Charleston, USA.
The Croatian took two hours and 46 minutes to wrap up a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory against the 16th seed and effectively book her spot in the second round.
18 year-old Vekic dominated the opening set with an easy three-point lead before the Brit fired up in the second set to make it a tie. However, in the decider, the Croatian immediately bounced back to beat Watson, and finally earn her third win in 2015.
The victory means that Vekic will either face Madison Brengle or Edina Gallovits in the second round, depending on the outcome of that match.
The 18 year-old made history last year, when she became the youngest player to win a WTA title since 2006 by triumphing in Kuala Lumpur.
