Family Circle Cup: Eugenie Bouchard suffers shocking exit

Canadian world number 7 Eugenie Bouchard suffered yet another shocking early exit, after being downed by Lauren Davis at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston.

Davis, ranked number 66, was also unseeded in this tournament, though she clinched a massive 6-3, 6-1 victory in 67 minutes, to book her spot in the next round.

This defeat marks Bouchard’s third first round defeat of the season, having last been knocked out in the first round of the Miami Open by Tatiana Maria.

“I was definitely a little bit slow today, overpowered,” Bouchard told CBC.

“Usually, I’m the one dominating. So it was definitely, just, I don’t know, just not good.”

The tournament also lost its second seed Ekaterina Makarova, who withdrew from the tournament due to a gastrointestinal disease, despite clinching a victory over China’s Zhang Shuai before that.
