Madrid Open: Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams through to second round

Top seed Serena Williams passed the first hurdle of her Madrid Open campaign after securing a comfortable win over Madison Brengle.

Williams, ranked No.1 in the world, only needed 55 minutes to trash Brengle with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win after breaking her six times to wrap up the win.

This will now allow the 19-time grand slam champion to face another American, Sloane Stephens in the next round.

“I don’t think I’ve played her on clay yet,” Williams was quoted as saying by the Latimes, about Stephens.

“We had a really tough three-set match the last time we played. She’s playing really well. She’s moving well and is having a better year this year. I think she’s kind of flying under the radar.”

Meanwhile, defending champion Maria Sharapova also advanced to the second round after downing Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinzsky 6-2, 6-3.

The Russian will next face Mariana Duque-Marino of Columbia who edged out British number one Heather Watson 6-0, 3-6, 6-7.
