AYTB Championship: Rafiq Ismail breaks record

National bowling prodigy Muhammad Rafiq Ismail managed to set two new records and also clinch Malaysia’s first gold medal at the 18th Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championships in Macau.

The 2015 Asian Championship silver medalist, who celebrates his birthday today, secured victory in the boy’s singles by a comfortable margin of 135 pins. The victory also marks Malaysia’s first gold medal of the competition

“I could not have wished for a better birthday present than to win my first gold medal here,” said Muhammad Rafiq to Bernama.

Rafiq also broke two records that were previously held by Australian Jason Belmonte. He secured 845 pins to beat Jason’s three-game record of 765, besides also setting a new six-game record with 1509 pins.

“And to break two records in the process has put the icing on the cake. I hope to carry my form into the doubles, team and masters events,” he added.
