Rangers’ Joey Barton charged by SFA for placing bets on 44 matches

Looks like the B is Barton stands for betting. The 34 year old Rangers midfielder has been charged by the Scottish Football Association (SFA) for allegedly placing 44 bets on football matches between July and September.

The scandal emerged as Barton was linked to Celtic’s 7-0 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League. He is already serving a three-week club ban, following a feud he had with team mate Andy Haliday and manager Mark Warburton.

The Scottish Football Association has a strict no-betting policy. If found guilty, Barton could be banned from playing football. He has already been given a notice of complaint by the SFA, and he has until next Wednesday to respond.

This is also not the first for a Rangers player. Midfielder Ian Black and veteran goalkeeper Steve Simonsen were found guilty of match fixtures in 2003 and 2005 respectively.
