#Rio2016: Thieves running rampant at Olympic village

The level of security at the Olympic village in Rio is increasingly worrying after another theft case was reported by the Danish contingent, causing organisers to come forward with an apology.

Denmark’s chef de mission, Morten Rodtwitt has informed reporters that the contingent’s mobile phones, shirts, and iPad went missing.

“In connection with the many extra workers, cleaners and housekeepers who have been squeezed into the Olympic village because of our requirements and requests, we have been subjected to a series of thefts,” he said.

The Danish delegation has filed around 150 complaints regarding the issues they faced since arriving at the complex on 18 July.

“The buildings here are simply not in order,” said Urik Wilbek, the head of the Danish Handball Association.

This latest case of thievery is the second at the Olympic village, after the Australian contingent reported that their laptops and shirts were stolen after a fire broke out last week.

Australia’s chef de mission, Kitty Chiller said she noticed there were three fire marshals who stole their clothing during the evacuation.

“When I arrived, the evacuations has begun half way and I saw three marshals, but I can’t recognize them as they walked out with the team’s shirts,” she said.
