Malaysian para cyclist withdrawn from time trial event after collapsing in Rio

Malaysian para cyclist Afiq Afify Rizan has been hospitalized in Rio de Janeiro after collapsing at the Games Village earlier this morning.

As a result, he has been withdrawn from the tandem 1km time trial final today, where he was scheduled to compete as a stroker with pilot Faizal Mohd Noh.

According to Malaysian para cycling head coach Johari Nayan, Afiq complained of severe headache, before collapsing. He is now being treated by a neurologist in Rio de Janeiro.

“They have started an antibiotics course. However, earlier MRI and CT scans came out negative for meningitis. At the moment his condition is stable and he is recovering,” he was quoted as saying by NST.

“His headaches have also subsided,But we have been forced to withdraw him from the 1km time trial final,” Johari added.
