Rio’s preparations for the upcoming Olympic Games has been plagued with many problems, and it has hit another snag after a loud explosion can be heard at the Maracana Stadium yesterday.
According to local broadcaster Channel 7, a robot was sent in by authorities to carry out a controlled explosion following the detection of a suspicious package.
There were reports saying the package might just be a tool box.
“What’s for sure, the explosion happened as soon as the robot entered the venue.
“We are trying to determine whether the explosion was caused by the robot destroying the package or vice versa,” said the Channel 7 spokesman.
The Maracana Stadium was previously used to host the 1950 World Cup final, and it will stage the opening and closing ceremonies of the upcoming Rio Olympics.
