EURO 2016: “No wives/girlfriends allowed!” – Chris Coleman

Wales boss, Chris Coleman has banned wives and girlfriends of his squad members from staying at the team’s hotel during Euro 2016.

Coleman is aware that with the presence of his players’ partners, also referred to as WAGs, will be an issue in major tournaments, especially after the presence of Victoria Beckham and Coleen Rooney overshadowed England’s campaign at the 2006 FIFA World Cup which was held in Germany.

Wales is hoping to make an impact in their first major tournament after 58 years. And Coleman believes that restricting the ‘WAGs’, including his own television host wife Charlotte Coleman, will help the squad focus on its goals.

“We have three games and there will be no family, no girlfriends, no wives in our hotel in the first period of the group stage,” Coleman told Agence France-Presse.

“We have three games in 10 days and there’s no time, we are preparing, travelling, playing, travelling.

“We said let’s get through the group because then there’s a six-day period and we can have a day where we say it’s OK to spend some time with the family and then, bang, we are at it again.”

Wales have been drawn against England, Slovakia and Russia in Group B.
