Khairy urges caution over Chong Wei expectations

Malaysian Youth and Sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin has urged fans to not pile the pressure on Datuk Lee Chong Wei, as he seeks to revive his form.

The former world number one has been relatively inconsistent since making his comeback from a doping scandal earlier this year. Despite making it to the World Championship final, Chong Wei as struggled in recent tournaments, including the Japan Open as well as the Korea Open.

But yesterday, Chong Wei ended the barren spell by clinching the French Open final – a victory that’s extremely pivotal to his hopes of competing at the Rio Olympics next year. But as far as Khairy is concerned, fans should not get too excited just yet.

“To do well in Rio, I’m pretty sure there are plenty of things for him to improve on. Only then can we analyse and carefully predict if he is capable of winning the gold medal,” he told Harian Metro.

“It’s hard to say if he’s back to his best, but I’m pretty sure that yesterday’s victory will be a major confidence boost for him,” he added.

The French Open triumph represents Chong Wei’s maiden SuperSeries title triumph this year and is set to also move him up the World Rankings ladder.
