“The victory was for Indonesia” – Greysia-Nitya delighted with Korean triumph

There is a positive mood amongst the badminton fans in Indonesia after their women’s doubles, Greysia Polii and Nitya Krishinda Maheswari secured their first Super Series title this year at the Korea Open last weekend.

The World No.5 beat the home representatives Chang Ye Na and Lee So Hee, on straight sets in the final.

Greysia was clearly delighted with the way they secured the win and felt that they did their best due to relentless support from the stands.

“This title is for Indonesia. We really wanted to give our best and win the title for the fans,” said Greysia.

“Our opponents probably thought they had an advantage by playing at home but we loved playing there. It felt like home. There is so much support from the fans and there are a lot of Indonesians who came to watch us,” she said.

Their glorious victory has also been celebrated by the head of Persatuan Bulutangkis Seluruh Indonesia (PBSI), Gita Wirjawan.

“Congratulations to Greysia and Nitya. Don’t stop fighting. Hopefully this win would drive them and the others to perform better in the future,” he said.

WHAT DO WE THINK?

It is a long-awaited win for them but they’ve finally done it. Both individuals were on a rough patch after winning the Asian Games in Incheon last year. But if they can continue their form, it won’t be a surprise if they eventually surpass the likes of Misaki-Ayaka or even Luo Yu-Luo Ying. As Gita Wirjawan said, hopefully, this win is the first of many!
