Chong Wei proves doubters wrong by clinching fourth All England triumph

How do you narrowly miss out on a tournament because of injury, before recovering in time  to go on and win it for the fourth time in your career? Ask Datuk Lee Chong Wei.

The Malaysian badminton star was barely made to work in the final as he comfortably outclassed China’s Shu Yuqi in straight sets to win his first All England title since 2014.

Chong Wei came into the match as the obvious favourite, but there was an air of uncertainty about it, given the fact that Shi Yuqi had knocked out his perennial rival, Lin Dan, in the semi-finals.

But it didn’t take long for Chong Wei to assert his dominance as he staged a strong performance to win the first set 21-12. Credits must be given to Shi Yuqi though, as the 21 year-old battled hard to raise his tempo in the second set.

Chong Wei’s superiority though was too much for him to handle as the Olympic silver medalist continued to dominate proceedings and eventually sealed a 21-10 win to clinch the title in style.

“I’d like to thank all my fans. All the Malaysian fans and even the All England fans here in Birmingham. It’s always nice to play here,” Chong Wei said after the match.
