National diver Ahmad Amsyar Azman has voiced out on his disappointment regarding the ongoing issue of facilities to practice, especially when it comes to aquatic centres.
The State Sports Complex’s Aquatic Centre in Perlis has been in a bad condition since last year, even after renovations, with the swimming pools left unclean and filled with moss.
For Amsyar, who has won the Singapore SEA Games gold medal in the 3 metre springboard synchronizing event with Ooi Tze Liang, the issue will eventually affect the growth of young divers.
“The place has been unattended for a very long time. How do you expect new divers to emerge if there are no proper facilities to practice?”
“Right now, I’m the only diver from Perlis in the national team who can’t practice there. But it feels sad to think that future young and talented divers will not get the chance to use the facilities as well,” he said to Harian Metro.
Few reports about the aquatic centre have shocked the public, including the Minister of Youth and Sports, Khairy Jamaluddin, who was quick to send warning to the contractor involved.
Amsyar added that Perlis have a number of gifted divers, who just needs to be shown the right path and developed into world class competing athletes.
“It’s not fair for the ones who are eager to train and swim. With pools like these, it’s better to just jump in the river.”
