It was the end of the road for national men’s doubles Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong as they were knocked out by China’s ninth seeds Liu Xiaolong-Qiu Zihan in the third round of the World Championships yesterday.
The Malaysian pair, who stunned defending champions Ko Sung Hyun-Shin Baek Choel of South Korea in the previous round, were far from their best as they lost in straight sets 21-18, 21-18.
“We are upset because we did not perform as expected. We could have won the game but we failed to keep the momentum going on. The China pair were confident and also quick to anticipate our shots,” V Shem told Utusan.
After their exit, Malaysia now have only two representatives in the competition: Lee Chong Wei in the men singles event, and women doubles pair Amelia Alicia Anscelly and Soong Fie Cho.
