Khairy Jamaluddin believes that it would be completely pointless to refurbish the Velodrome Rakyat if the Malaysian National Cycling Association (PKBM) do not take the necessary measures to preserve it’s condition.
Speaking at launch of the Malaysian Skiing Association, Khairy claims that the Ministry of Youth and Sports channeled funds to repair the track in 2004, though it’s condition deteriorated over the years, before being completely shambolic in 2012.
Since then, the velodrome has not been used for any trainings or events. While PKBM and the Perak Cycling Association have actively called for it to be refurbished, Khairy was quick to point out spending RM4 million on it will not change anything, if PKBM themselves do not preserve the venue.
He also went on to suggest that the wooden track should be converted into a cement track, making the job of preserving it a whole lot easier.
Meanwhile, Azizulhasni Awang has also jumped on the bandwagon to call for the repair of the venue, suggesting that the future of track cycling in Malaysia, depended on it.
