Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has said that the repairing works on the Rakyat Velodrome in Ipoh is scheduled to go ahead despite being delayed since 2013.
He cited the lack of funding as the main reason that refurbishments has been delayed but nevertheless assured that despite the setbacks, will be completed.
“We set aside RM200,000 based on initial estimates to resurface the venue. But PWD discovered the structure below the surface was also damaged,” said Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
“They gave us an estimate and we told them to cut it down. We reached a figure of RM7 million to get it at a usable condition but we don’t have a budget this year.
“It’s in the 11th Malaysia Plan and hopefully we can get it off the ground next year or the year after,” said Khairy, as quoted by The Malay Mail.
Unsurprisingly, the delayed construction works means that national track cyclist will have no proper place to train as the Kuala Lumpur Velodrome that the national team have been using cannot be used at the moment as the area has been sold for the development of housing projects. The new velodrome in Nilai has not been completed yet, which leaves the national team gasping at straws for a place to train.
