Squash queen Datuk Nicol Ann David bagged another award to add to her illustrious list of achievement after being voted as 2014’s Athlete of the Year during the Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM)-100Plus Award ceremony that was held yesterday.
This comes after a glorious year in which she further cemented her status as a legend by breaking the record of being World Number One for a consecutive amount of 106 weeks.
The Malaysian sports queen bypassed national body builder Sazali Samad, racer Zaqhwan Zaidi, weightlifter Hafifi Mansor and karate ace Lim Chee Wei, to secure the award for the second time since 2005.
Nicol, who is currently training in Amsterdam under coach Liz Irving for the upcoming British Open, was unable to make it for the event. However, former national squash player Sharon Wee attended the ceremony to receive the trophy and a total of RM10,000, on behalf of Nicol.
Meanwhile, 12 year-old Muizzudin Andul Ghafar, who had clinched the World Karting Series Championship title last year, was awarded the Young Athlete of the Year award.
