British number one Heather Watson is through to the second round of the BNP Paribas Open after a nerve-wrecking win over Germany’s Julia Goerges at Indian Wells.
The Brit, who hasn’t won a match on the WTA Tour since clinching the Hobart International title, managed to overcome Julia in a three-set victory, winning 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
She powered through the first set, before Goerges eventually fought back in the second set to drag the match into a decider/ Watson then immediately leveled the scored on the third set, before wrapping up the match in two hours and 25 minutes.
“I was definitely a bit nervous, I think it showed closing out the second set there, but I kept fighting and was able to play the right way to finish the third set,” Watson told BT Sport 2.
“I just kept fighting. We both didn’t play our best tennis but it was a good match.”
She will next face 29th seed Camila Giorgi in the second round,
