Exclusive: Vietnamese fan provides safety tips for Malaysian supporters

If you’re either Malaysian or Vietnamese, I’m relatively sure that you’re aware of the fracas that took place after the first leg clash between both sides last Sunday.

A small group of Malaysian fans attacked several Vietnamese supporters after the game, beating them up besides sparking a massive online response from the fans of the Golden Stars. Besides threatening Safiq Rahim on his Facebook page, several Vietnamese fans also warned Malaysian supporters to prepare themselves for a hostile reception in Hanoi.

While the Vietnamese authorities have promised to increase and tighten precautionary measures ahead of the game, concerns are still being raised over the safety of Malaysians, who will be making their way for the match tomorrow. Thus, we exclusively spoke to a Vietnam football fans based in Hanoi, on tips to stay safe and avoid trouble in the city.

FO: Thanks for speaking with us Nguyen Quang Minh, we appreciate your assistance on the matter. Apologies again for everything that took place last weekend.

NQM: No worries brother. I think it’s about time we put this behind us and focus on the football. I think the most important thing to do upon reaching Hanoi, is to get a Vietnamese Sim Card and it’s relatively cheap as well. Once you get it, save the emergency police number, which is 113. Always keep your phone close to you, because there are thieves within the city.

FO: What should the fans do when they get to the My Dinh stadium on Thursday? Any specific tips on that?

NQM: The police forces will be on duty, so that’s a good thing. Avoid walking or sitting alone. Sit within the group of Malaysians, and try not to provoke anyone during the match. It’s fine to chant and cheer, just don’t provoke, because a small group of people will be looking for excuses to start something. You wouldn’t want to give them that reason. Tension will visibly be in the air, so try to interact with some Vietnamese fan groups and be friendly with them. Most of them here are friendly as well, make no mistakes. Do not, and I repeat, do not wear anything like the hooligans at the Shah Alam Stadium wore, because you will be a easy target then. Avoid that at all cost.

FO: As exhibited in the game last weekend, most of the tension took place after the game. What should Malaysians do right after the final whistle?

NQM: The police should be forming protective barricades for them to  exit the stadium safely, but it would be better if you can have the contact details of a cab driver, and call him to wait for you outside the stadium beforehand. There are only two main exit areas at the stadium, so once you’re out, leave immediately. Do not provoke, or chant loudly outside the stadium, as it will attract the small group of violent fans. You never know, so just to be safe, get in the cab and leave the vicinity and get back to your hotel as soon as you can.

FO: Thanks for these info Minh! I’m sure the Malaysian fans would greatly appreciate it. Any other general tips?

NQM: I don’t mean to paint the city as a bad place, because it’s not. It’s an amazing city with plenty of friendly people. But we have our small group of hooligans running around as well, just like you do. And in times like this, when tension is high, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Another thing, it’s winter in Hanoi now, so do bring extra winter clothing. Always be aware of your belongings and personal items. And try to use the cab services that are provided directly at your hotel; their rates are fair, and safety is usually unquestionable.

FO: Cheers and thanks Minh! Good luck for the game!

NQM: No worries! May the best team win 😉
