Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Ministry has engaged a top sports lawyer, to assist in Lee Chong Wei’s doping scandal.
Its Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin confirms he has been in touch with Mike Morgan, who is one of the top 20 most influential sports lawyers, ahead of the results of Lee’s B sample today.
“If the B sample is found positive, Mike will prepare the mitigation to ensure a minimal sentence against the athlete in question,” he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.
He adds that the athlete was only administered the substance once on July 17th, according to his recent medical history, for a muscle injury.
Dexamethasone, which is not a performance-enhancing drug, should metabolise within 10 days to two weeks after being administered and is banned in competition, but not out of competition.
Lee was implicated in the doping scandal after traces of the drug was found in his body during a random test at the World Badminton Championships in Denmark back in August.
The Minister also said, that the National Sports Institute had even conducted their own independent tests on all his supplements, drinks, and even his hair gel, as they want to be as thorough as possible.
The world number one risks being suspended from the sport for two years, though he could likely escape suspension and only serve six months, due to a factor of reasons.
