Bernie Ecclestone reckons it would be better for the struggling Caterham Formula One team to just leave the sport.
According to several reports, the F1 boss had allegedly said “I think it’s better they go. I don’t want people going around with begging bowls.”
Caterham joined F1 back in 2010, but has yet to score a single point since then, and has had to deal with turbulent problems over the past few months. Until recently, Caterham Sports was owned by Malaysian company, 1Malaysia Racing Team, which in turn was owned by a group of businessmen lead by Air Asia magnate, Tony Fernandes.
1Malaysia Racing Team holds the grid slot to race in F1, while Caterham Sports was set up to design and manufacture its cars.
Ecclestone adds, “I don’t know who owns them. I don’t think anybody does. I think we ought to ask Colin. I have no idea. I don’t know and I don’t care. Let me tell you something, they will tell you whatever suits them to tell you. I don’t know whether the deal has gone through”.
His comments follows Caterham’s controversial statement blasting previous owner, Fernandes, for not transferring shares over since the sale of the F1 outfit. He has since given his response on Twitter, adding that his lawyers will send out a statement soon.
