Las Vegas could soon have their very own Formula One race on the calendar.
FIA boss Bernie Ecclestone, who has been pushing to bring the sport back to Vegas for over 20 years, says the race would likely start off on The Strip, referring to the famous road which runs through the centre of Las Vegas, and is lined with glittering casino resorts, including the Bellagio and Caesars Palace.
The last Formula One races Las Vegas saw was back in 1981 and 1982, on a track in the Caesars Palace car park. It however failed to get enough support from within the industry due to the temporary nature and design of the course.
According to sources in the US racing scene, F1’s track designer, Hermann Tilke, has already visited Las Vegas several times to work on the layout of the course, a sure sign that the project is already at an advanced stage.
A Las Vegas Grand Prix would double the number of F1 races in the US, after the sport made its return there again after a five-year absence. The US Grand Prix, which is next up on this year’s calendar, kicks off in Austin, Texas, on November 2nd.
