Mercedes to “not forget what happened to Jules” despite historic day

Executive director of Mercedes Benz Motorsport Torger “Toto” Wolff has admitted that Mercedes’ joys of winning a historic first ever constructor’s championship at the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi this past weekend must be kept in check as a show of respect for the critically injured driver Jules Bianchi.

Speaking to the press following the event, Wolff firstly acknowledged celebrations, but then quickly made the need for humility clear.

“I just feel proud to be part of the team, part of the team of which foundations were built by Ross Brawn” he said, acknowledging the role of former motorsport engineer and Formula One team principal Ross Brawn in Mercedes’ constructors championship.

“We constantly ramped our game up, we made the right decisions, and we got the right resources…today is the result of that” he went on to add.

“[But] even if we have celebrations, and even if the boys are very happy with all the hard work, we will not forget what happened to Jules” he then stated.

Wolff’s statements echo the sentiments of most of the Formula 1 paddock, who have universally shown support for both Bianchi and his family since the accident.

Bianchi was rushed to medical facilities in Suzuka City after injuring his head in a crash at the Japanese GP two weeks ago; his condition remains critical.
