Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Monta Ellis sprained his left knee during practice on Thursday and will miss at least two pre season games for the side, ESPN reported earlier today.
Ellis underwent medical tests after the training session, the results of which Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle cited in his official statement following the incident.
“The diagnostic tests did not show any structural damage, which is great news” Carlisle told ESPN in a statement.
“He’s got to do treatment and rehab. He’s going to miss two games for sure and then Monday we’ll update you” he went on to add.
Ellis, who was the only Maverick player to play in all 82 games last season, averaged 19 points and 5.7 assists for his side last year.
The player’s injury means he joins forward Dirk Nowitzki on the sidelines, who is currently out with a right hip contusion endured during a practice match exactly a week ago.
The absence of Nowitzki and now Ellis means the Mavs will be without their full starting five for their pre-season game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on October 17.
The Mavs are expected to field their three fit summer acquisitions in point guard Jameer Nelson, small forward Chandler Parsons, and centre Tyson Chandler against the Cavaliers.
