Terengganu got their Malaysia Super League campaign off to a solid start after securing a morale-boosting win over Selangor in Kuala Terengganu
The home side certainly started the game as the better side though Selangor eventually seized initiative and started pushing upfront. Guilherme looked dangerous as their solitary forward while Andik and Hazwan consistently threatened with their runs as well.
Hazwan had a couple of shots on target, but Sharbinee was equal to both attempts. Manaf Mamat then tried his luck, but it missed the target by inches.
On the 26th minute, Hazwan Bakri’s attempt rattled against the post, before Sharbinee pulled off a stunning one-on-one save to deny the talented forward yet again.
But just moments later, Terengganu seized the lead through a sensational volley from Ismail Faruqi, sending the home crowd into raptures. Ashaari could have made it 2-0 before the break, but his shot sailed way over the bar.
After the break, Selangor showed a bit more initiative on the offence and produced two back-to-back chances. Azrif Nasrulhaq fired the first one wide, before Leandro’s scuffed attempt was blocked by the Terengganu defence.
Andik visibly worked his socks off to create openings for Selangor, but the understanding between Guilherme and Hazwan was relatively poor, resulting in their inability to execute chances effectively.
The game evolved into a scrappy affair after the half hour mark, with fouls being given away easily. But just when you thought it could die off, Terengganu produced a moment of magic to double their lead and inject some spark into the game. Gustavo Lopez dispatched a majestic free kick from outside the box, beating an outstretched Norazlan Razali to make it 2-0.
Mehmet Durakovic brought Nazmi Faiz and Thamil Arasu on with hopes it being able to spark a comeback but the home side eventually held on to secure victory and valuable three points.
