Johor DT skipper Safiq Rahim is no stranger to being constantly placed under the spotlight, and that’s precisely why he claims it’s crucial for him or any other footballer for that matter, to be extremely diligent in their usage of social networking sites.
The tenacious playmaker was once a target for abuse, due to a dip in his form. But since then, Safiq has improved significantly and as depicted in his two-goal show against Sarawak last night, he’s already back at his best, influencing play from the middle of the park.
That being said, the 27 year-old continues to be careful with his usage of social media and is determined to stay positive throughout any potential tough period in the future.
“To be honest, I refrain from using any social networking sites, except for Instagram because I don’t see the benefit in using them. So, when the abuse came in, I wasn’t affected too much,” he told FourthOfficial.com
“But yes, fans can be cruel at times but I always remind myself to stay positive and keep looking to the future. I work hard because I love this sport. Though at the same time, I’m in the process of learning and improving every single day.”
Johor DT went into their game last night, knowing that they were massive favourites to claim victory. The Southern Tigers have never lost a Super League match at the Larkin Stadium since mid-2012 and they extended that run by claiming a win over the Crocs.
When quizzed on what makes them unstoppable within their home ground, Safiq was certainly compelled to suggest that the pitch condition remains a major factor.
“There are various different reasons as to why we are great and strong whenever we play at home. But I would certainly say that the pitch condition plays an important part as well.
Besides the fact that they triumphed last night, the Larkin Stadium also produced a sensational farewell for Jorge Pereyra Diaz, who will be departing the club in April. The Argentinean forward played a massive part in them winning their maiden league title last year, besides inspiring them to the Malaysia Cup final.
While Safiq maintained that his departure would be a massive blow to the club, he was also quick to insist that Johor DT have secured the signature of a player that’s capable of replicating Diaz’s influence, in the form of Patito Rodriguez.
“I would say that any players’ departure would be a loss for our side, especially Diaz because he is one of our key ‘attacking weapon’. But either way, I believe Johor DT have signed a replacement that is equally talented if not better,” he added.
