Lille head coach Rene Girard believes that Arsenal’s catastrophic defeat to Monaco in the first leg of their Champions League tie proves that the English Premier League is ‘s***’.
The Premier League is widely regarded as the most commercialized football league as it continues to rake in profits from its global audience. On the contrast, the Ligue 1 has been criticized for not being exciting enough in recent times, though Rene Girard certainly thinks otherwise after watching the Gunners getting crushed in midweek.
“To those who say our league is shit, it [Monaco’s win over Arsenal] proves there’s perhaps shit elsewhere as well,” he told Daily Mail.
The Gunners were absolutely ripped apart by their French counterparts, going down 1-0 at half time, before Berbatov made it 2-0 after the break. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netted a late consolation with an excellent effort but that was Monaco added a third through Carrasco to give themselves a hefty advantage heading into the second leg.
Another English club, Manchester City, also suffered a first leg defeat at home, falling 2-1 to Barcelona at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Liverpool were effectively knocked out of the Europa League, after losing to Besiktas on penalties last Thursday.
