McLaren claim that unpredictable gusty winds at the 150 mph corner played a massive part in Fernando Alonso’s crash at during their test session over the weekend.
Rumours have been suggesting that an electrical fault caused the incident, with the Spaniard suffering from a mild concussion as a result. But McLaren conducted a detailed analysis of the incident and the damage on the car, claiming that telemetry data indicates that gusty winds caused the incident.
“We can categorically state that there is no evidence that indicates that Fernando’s car suffered mechanical failure of any kind,” the team told Reuters.
The data also indicated that there was no damage to the aerodynamic pressure, electrical discharge or irregularities in the Energy Recovery System (ERS) throughout the incident.
“That last point refutes the erroneous rumors that have spread recently to the effect that Fernando was rendered unconscious by an electrical fault. That is simply not true.”
The team revealed in an update that the two-time world champion will remain in the hospital for thorough recovery although he has been given the all-clear by doctors.
This casts doubts on Alonso’s ability to participate in this week’s four-day pre-season test in Barcelona, ahead of the Melbourne Grand Prix on March 15
