American teenager Madison Keys secured a momentous victory over her childhood inspiration Venus Williams to book her spot in the semis of Australian Open.
The unseeded teenager took only one hour and 54 minutes to complete a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win, which effectively sent the 18th seed packing.
Keys dominated the first set with an easy 6-3 win, but Venus bounced back to make it even by winning the second set 4-6. In the third set though, the American teenager did not give up and pushed through with a 6-4 win to make it to the semi-finals.
“The moment’s definitely sweeter being able to play Venus,” the world number 35 told ABC News.
“It’s amazing, obviously I was very nervous coming out but I had to embrace the moment and I did and I get to enjoy another moment in the next round.”
The 19 year old will next face either top seed Serena Williams or Dominika Cibulkova depending on their quarter-finals match later today.
