Ex-Kedah footballer pleads guilty to match-fixing charges in Singapore

Former Kedah footballer Thanasegar S. Sinnaiah has pleaded guilty to being involved in a foil to fix a football match between Sarawak and LionsXII back in 2012.

The 40 year-old businessman plotted to fix the match alongside Singaporean Selvarajan Letchumanan, with referee Shokri Nor being offered RM15,000 to ensure that LionsXII clinch the game by at least a three-goal margin.

However, their ploy was detected prior to the game and all three men were arrested before kick off. Thanasegar was charged under eight separate offences and as of yesterday, he was convicted under four of those charges.

Meanwhile, the case involving Selvarajan Letchumanan will be heard in February, though the police are still on the hunt for Shokri Nor, who has been on the run since he was released.

According to Straits Times’ report, Thanasegar was contacted by Selvarajan in May 2012, where it was established that Shokri Nor was the referee of the game. One day later, all three men met at Selvarajan’s hotel room in Penang, where discussion on fixing the match was held.

The match ended in LionsXII favour, with the Singaporean side winning 3-0 on the day.
