World No.1 Novak Djokovic is edging closer towards clinching the Qatar Open title after his win over Sergiy Stakhovsky moved him into the quarter finals of the competition.
The Serbian, who is using this tournament as preparation for the upcoming Australian Open, defeated his Ukrainian opponent 6-2, 6-1, effectively clinching a quarter finals tie against Ivo Karlovic.
Karlovic, who became the third player to join the 9,000 aces club earlier this week, secured a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory over Nikoloz Basiashvili of Georgia in the previous round.
After Rafael Nadal’s first round exit in the tournament, Djokovic is currently massive favourites for the tournament title, but he is not ready to trivialize the ability of Karlovic.
“I’m definitely going to try to get some good sleep so my reaction tomorrow is quick, because I’m going to need that, definitely,” Djokovic told AP. “Honestly, I’m still to meet a player who enjoys playing him.”
