Liverpool battled through a resilient Guangzhou Evergrande side to secure a key 2-0 victory, that strengthened their chances of making it to the quarter finals of the Frenz International Cup.
Canon Tenes Sergi was the hero for the Reds last night, scoring two goals in the second half to spur them to a victory, though the match was in no way an easy ride for Liverpool.
Guangzhou were solid at the back and worked their socks off throughout the middle of the park. But more importantly, they had their fair share of chances as well, though most of them were either wide off target, or saved diligently by the man in between Liverpool’s stick.
Meanwhile, Feyenoord and Frenz United Indonesia played out a 1-1 draw in Palembang. Nima Hamid opened the scoring just before the half time mark, slotting home from close range to give FUI the advantage.
But after the break, Feyenoord fought back diligently, before eventually restoring parity through Danny Van Haaren; a result that certainly left their head coach Johannes Gosgens feeling relieved.
“We are lucky to win this match as Frenz Indonesia was in complete control of the first half. After taking a 1-0 lead I thought they would put more pressure on us in the second but instead they slowed down,” said Feyenoord head coach Johannes Gosgens.
“I am very proud of my players for working hard despite the heat and humidity which was against us,” he added.
Gamba Osaka on the other hand, romped to a comfortable 4-0 win over PVF Vietnam in Bangi yesterday. The Japanese side were visibly far more dominant from the get go though Vietnam managed to keep them at bay in the first 45 minutes, conceding only one goal.
But continuous pressure from Gamba eventually got to the Vietnamese players as they succumbed after the break, letting in three goals and thus allowing Gamba to seal a crucial victory that puts them in the driving seat.
