Wendy Turnbull rues lack of rivalry in women’s tennis

Former tennis great Wendy Turnbull believes that the current women tennis scene is top notch, though it’s excellence is being severely affected by the lack of rivalry within the circuit.

The Australian starred in the tennis scene back in the 1970s and 1980s; winning a total of 9 Grand Slam titles throughout the career. But beyond that she was consistently challenging for honours, and had a long standing rivalry with the likes of Pam Shriver and Chris Evert.

Serena Williams is visibly the top star when it comes to women’s tennis as of now, but the fact that there’s no other individual who is consistent enough to be able to challenge her, is the part that worried Wendy the most.

And I think that hurts women’s tennis a little bit because you like to have a rivalry – myself and Pam Shriver; there was Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova,” she told The Brisbane Times.

“And that was an unbelievable rivalry. And then later on you got Steffi Graf and Monica Seles. And I don’t think you have had quite the same rivalry since.

“Because Serena (Williams) has dominated whenever she has felt like dominating. Maria Sharapova has been up there, but she had one or two years where she has been injured and had to take time off.”

“I mean the depth in women’s tennis is good, but people do like to see the rivalry.”
