Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic won gold in the women’s 400-meter relay on Friday at the Paris 2024 Olympics, setting a new Olympic record.
Three years after winning silver in Tokyo, Paulino surpassed Marie-Jose Perec’s 1996 record of 48.25 seconds by crossing the finish line in 48.17 seconds.
It was the most recent evidence of the Dominican’s current supremacy in the competition, which began with her triumph at the World Championships in Budapest last year.
Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser placed second, and Poland’s Natalia Kaczmarek took home the bronze.
With a time of 49.29 seconds, Amber Anning of Great Britain broke the 11-year-old British record set by Christine Ohuruogu and ended in fifth place.
“I’m absolutely blessed. I am a little bit disappointed. I wanted to come away with three things,” Anning said.
“It was either a medal, a PB or a national record and I got one of them. I’m just grateful to be in this position with these amazing girls.
“It was tough [the race], I think I let myself have too much work coming into home straight but I just used my strength.
“It’s been an amazing experience. “It’s still not done yet. I’ve got the relay tomorrow.”
