Erik ten Hag put doubts about his future to rest when he guided Manchester United to FA Cup glory at Wembley, defeating Premier League winners Manchester City 2-1.
Ten Hag’s status was a major topic of discussion leading up to the game, as rumours on Friday indicated that United had made the decision to sever ties with the Dutchman regardless of the outcome of the championship match.
If this was to be his last game as manager, the United players gave him the ultimate send-off as goals from Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho in the first half startled Pep Guardiola’s team. Garnacho capitalised on a disastrous mistake made by Josko Gvardiol and Stefan Ortega.
In the second half, Manchester City made two attempts to tie the score, but Andre Onana saved long-range shots from Kyle Walker and Erling Haaland, and the latter’s goal struck the bar. Onana, though, was unable to stop substitute Jeremy Doku’s goal as City equalised in the 87th minute, setting up an exciting conclusion.
The fourth official signalled seven minutes of stoppage time, to the roars of the City supporters. However, United supporters celebrated when the full-time whistle blew, as their team managed to hold on to prevent their opponents from becoming the first team to win the league and FA Cup in back-to-back seasons.
After winning the Carabao Cup the previous year, United now has two trophies under Ten Hag: the FA Cup. In addition, Manchester United successfully avoided a poor league season by qualifying for the Europa League; nevertheless, it is still unclear if Ten Hag would guide the team into the following one.
