Borussia Dortmund lost their Champions League quarterfinal first leg to Atletico Madrid 2-1, but Sebastien Haller scored a vital goal to give them hope.
On home ground, Diego Simeone’s team applied intense pressure, and after just four minutes, Rodrigo De Paul scored following a horrific pass from Ian Maatsen.
In the first half, Atletico were faster and more agile all over the pitch. Samuel Lino’s calm finish following a beautiful feed from Antoine Griezmann made it 2-0.
After the interval, Dortmund just needed to get better, and Julian Brandt’s arrival gave them a boost. Nevertheless, until Haller showed up with a merciless finish from 15 yards out.
With the final kick of the match, the visitors were on the verge of making it 2-2, but Brandt’s header crashed back off the crossbar.
In La Liga, Atletico takes on Girona, while in the Bundesliga, Dortmund visits Borussia Monchengladbach. Both matches are scheduled for this Saturday, April 16, with the return leg taking place at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday.
