Last night at Anfield, Liverpool and Fulham played out an action packed cup tie.
Willian gave the visitors an early lead after receiving the ball in the box from fellow Brazilian, Andreas Pereira, and slotted it calmly in the bottom corner past goalkeeper Caiomhin Kelleher.
Liverpool did try to retaliate just before the first half ended with a wild effort from Joe Gomez, which flew just past the post, the ever present defender still waiting on his first senior goal.
Liverpool started the second half in similar fashion as they ended the first with Ryan Gravenberch coolly dancing past the Fulham midfield before placing his shot just wide of the post at the Kop end.
Liverpool finally had their lucky break as Curtis Jones received the ball after a slide tackle from Diogo Jota on the edge of the box, and he struck it off the back of Issa Diogo which took a wicked deflection and looped over helpless keeper Bernd Leno.
This allowed the floodgates to open as just 3 minutes later Jota played a pass through to Darwin Nunez who cut it back in the box for Cody Gakpo to put past Leno at his near post. Liverpool continued to attack but couldn’t find another opening which meant the game finished 2-1 at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp said after the game:
“To turn a game around first and foremost you need quality, to turn a game around you obviously need belief and everything beyond that is mentality. This season we’ve had to overcome real difficulties early on where nobody knew how we were gonna react because you cannot plan it, you cannot train it, you just watch it and the boys did it”
This is testament to Klopp’s team and how they have stayed resilient throughout this season as they are known for going 1-0 down in matches, but Klopp’s “mentality monsters” as they are know known keep marching on.
Liverpool head to Bournemouth on Sunday hoping to extend their amazing run and strengthen their grip on top spot in the Premier League.
