Boro and Chelsea played out a cagey and classic Cup tie last night.
Chelsea had looked confident coming into this game, seeming to have turned around their fortunes with winning 3 games in a row, but poor finishing was once again their downfall.
In the first half Cole Palmer failed to capitalise on a stray pass from Middlesbrough captain, Jonny Howson, just slotting it past the post.
That would come back to haunt Chelsea as later in the half, Isaiah Jones would make a darting run through the right wing after a gorgeous lobbed pass was played, taking on Levi Colwill in the box and cutting it back for Hayden Hackney to calmly put it past the keeper.
Chelsea would go on to create more chances but shots from Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher and Enzo Fernandez weren’t able to trouble Boro keeper Tom Glover enough, who had a good game.
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino said after the game: “I think we created chances enough to score but we were not clinical and in football if you don’t score it’s difficult to win”
”We dominated, we were the better side but in the end this type of games in cups, this type of situation can always happen and we now need to focus on the next game which is Fulham and then the second leg”
Chelsea go into that game against Fulham looking to change their fortunes and climb up the Premier League table.
