Malaysian MMA fighter Agilan Thani took on USA’s Ben Askren at the co-main event at the One Championship: Dynasty of Heroes on Friday night.
The fight was called by Agilan, who challenged defending champion Askren for his title after defeating Jeff Huang earlier this year.
Round 1 of the fight commenced, and Ben Askren wasted no time is pinning Agilan down and firmly floating above him. Agilan tried to break free, and managed to get back on his feet for a few seconds.
Askren got him down again and pinned him to the ground, and this time he also employed the arm-triangle choke on Agilan. The Malaysian fighter fought with great mettle and tried to hold on for as long as he could.
After 2 minutes and 22 seconds, Agilan tapped out, and Ben Askren continues to reign as the One welterweight world champion.
“I see a lot of Malaysian fans here tonight showing support, and that’s fantastic.” Ben Askren said after retaining his belt.
“Agilan is only 21, so I don’t think this is the last I’ll see of him. We’ll probably meet again.” said Askren, who is also a former Olympic wrestler.
In the main event, the Women’s Atomweight world championship, Singapore’s Angela Lee went up against her challenger, Brazil’s Istela Nunes.
Angela Lee also retains her title after Nunes tapped out, giving into Angela’s Anaconda choke in Round 2 after 2 minutes and 18 seconds.
