Marc Marquez is reportedly planning to move to Andorra, a country between Spain and France, to reduce his taxes.
The two time world MotoGP champion, who is said to be earning around 10 million euros a year, will get to reduce his tax liability to an annual 30,000 euros by establishing his permanent residence in Andorra, as opposed to paying close to 50% in taxes if he remains in his home region.
The 21 year old and his brother, Alex, who is Moto3 world champion this year, come from Catalunya, just 120 kilometres from Andorra.
Marquez is not the only Spanish celebrity who has relocated abroad for tax reasons, with international cyclist Alberto Contador and Marquez’s own MotoGP colleague Dani Pedrosa both residing in Switzerland for the very same reason.
Even his fellow rider, Jorge Lorenzo, will soon become Marquez’s new neighbour as he, too, lives in Andorra for the same motives.
Some of his fans denounced him as a Spaniard when the news broke, with many calling him a traitor, causing the number of his Twitter followers to drop by a fair bit.
