Last week, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) announced that they were resorting to withdraw money from their fixed deposit account to help settle payments for M.League teams.
FAM will withdraw at least RM 9 million to be given out to 24 M.League teams so they can pay up money they owed to players. 12 Super League teams will receive RM 500,000, while 12 Premier League teams will receive RM 250,000.
“We want the teams to settle the wages that they owe their players so we have to withdraw money from our fixed deposits… this shouldn’t happen but we want to put an end to this,” said FAM president, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, after the FAM’s exco meeting last Saturday.
“The M-League teams will be given two weeks once they have received their payment from FAM to settle their debts with their players. If they fail, action will be taken against them.” the president added.
FAM’s Technical & Youth Football Development Chairperson, Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal lauded the effort and expressed that this move should demonstrate how concerned TMJ is about the welfare of players in the M.League.
“It’s a brave move by TMJ. We could really use the funds right now, especially for FAS (Football Association of Selangor). We did not get any financial support from the state government last season either, so this is helpful.” Datuk Subahan Kamal told Berita Harian.
“RM 500,000 will be used to settle all the player’s wages that we owe. Of course, all these should have been resolved by the previous management.”
“But it’s okay, as FAS president, I will make sure every player gets their payment and all the debts are sorted.” Datuk subahan added.
Datuk Subahan Kamal also urged all the other M.League teams to used the funds wisely, and to pay up what they owed to the players. Failing to comply, the teams will face severe penalties like docking points and even relegation.
