Youth and Sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin insists that he’s not keen on contesting for the top job at Football Association of Malaysia, if Tunku Ismail ibni Sultan Ibrahim is up for the job.
Speaking at a press conference earlier today, Khairy said: “I have met with representatives of the association who had nominated (me) for the post, and I have made it clear (to the public) as to the reasons why they nominated me.
“But if TMJ is contesting, I don’t need to be there. I have other things to do also,” he was quoted as saying by New Straits Times.
The 41 year-old has been heavily linked with the post in the last few weeks, with TMJ regularly claiming to not be interested in competing for it. But a number FAM affiliates held an audience with the Sultan of Johor last week as they lobbied for TMJ to accept his nomination.
The Johor ruler did give his son the ‘permission’ to ‘change’ Malaysian football but as of 12PM today, former Kelantan president Tan Sri Annuar Musa is the only one who has accepted his nomination for the role.
Aside from TMJ and Khairy, another candidate who has yet to accept his nomination is Tan Sri Aseh Che Mat. The cut off time for all three remaining candidates to accept their nomination is 5.30 pm. Should none of them step up to accept it, Tan Sri Annuar Musa will win the election unopposed.
