The Malaysia women’s hockey team, also known as the Malaysian Tigress, had to settle for second place as they were beaten by Ireland in the final of the Hockey World League (Round Two) at the Tun Razak Hockey stadium yesterday.
Ireland got the early lead when Anna O’Flanagan found the back of the net for Ireland at the 7th minute. This was followed by another shot by Kathryn Mullan at the 10th minute, which gave Ireland a 2-0 lead even before halftime.
The Malaysian Tigress tried everything in their power to work some magic in the second half, but still no luck. Eventually, they were sent to second place as Zoe Wilson delivered a powerful shot to bring up the score to 3-0 in favour of Ireland.
Malaysia had a chance to score at the 9th minute when they were awarded a penalty, but Nuraini Rashid failed to convert the chance.
Ireland emerged champions of the Hockey World League and consequently made it to the Hockey World League semifinals. Malaysia came in second, and Italy finished third after beating Wales 3-1.
On the bright side, the Malaysian Tigress still did qualify for the Hockey World League semifinals via two fixed slot tickets. Malaysia’s Hanis Onn also bagged the award for the Best Young Player, while Anna O’Flanagan took home the award for Best Player.
