Rafael Nadal’s coach Toni Nadal has made some surprising comments over the Spaniard, which came as a surprise to the tennis world.
His latest comments included ranking Nadal, who is also his nephew, as only the third-best player in this generation.
He claims that Nadal is inferior to Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, a move which has sparked rumours of tension brewing within the camp of the 14-time Grand Slam champion.
“With all the titles he has won, there is no doubt that Federer is the greatest. Rafael has won more titles than Novak Djokovic, but speaking merely about tennis and about the game, Rafa has to be considered slightly lower than Djokovic,”
“The Serb is such a good player that he is as close as you can get to Federer.” he said to reporters.
After winning 10 championships in 2013, Nadal endured a see-saw 2014 campaign that saw him defending the French Open championship and bombing out early at Wimbledon.
The world number 3 was also forced to skip the North American hardcourt season due to a fractured right wrist.
He later attempted a comeback in the Asian circuit of the ATP Tour, but appendicitis forced him to go on a hiatus for the remainder of the season.
