Watch out Malaysia, we’ve got a new striker in town!
English-Malaysian forward Darren Lok has officially received his Malaysian passport, making him eligible to play for JDT II as well as the Malaysian national team.
Lok had been waiting on the sidelines over the last couple of months due to procedural delays in getting his Malaysian citizenship, though it now appears that the problem has been finally sorted out.
According to a source close to Lok, the ex-Eastbourne Borough striker received confirmation on his citizenship status earlier today and he is now looking forward to getting his Malaysian journey kick-started.
The 24 year-old arrived in Malaysia last May, though he only signed for JDT II approximately one month later, after making a strong impression in training sessions.
“Among all the mixed-heritage players, Darren Lok looks the most promising. He also gains respect from the locals as well as the foreign players. We are certainly very excited with his talent and look forward to see him in action,” JDT Sports Director Alistair Edwards said, during the announcement.
Unfortunately, this means Lok just narrowly missed out on a possible national call-up as Datuk Ong Kim Swee unveiled his latest national squad list yesterday. But the dearth of prolific Malaysian strikers mean Lok’s availability comes as a timely boost for Ong, ahead of the AFF Suzuki Cup, which is slated to kick-off in November.
