AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes has declared his willingness to consider taking over the Football Association of Malaysia’s (FAM) presidency role, should the opportunity present itself in the near future.
With Tengku Abdullah publicly announcing his decision to resign as FAM president, rumours of various potential candidates have been circulating around the country, though it now seems that Fernandes could be a front-runner.
“If I’m asked about taking up the presidency, I will consider it,” Fernandes was quoted as saying by Astro Arena, at an AirAsia event in Bangkok, yesterday.
The current executive committee’s term is scheduled to only end in 2018, though its members have agreed to leave their position next year, paving the way for fresh elections to take place in 2017.
While it remains to be seen if Fernandes is sought-after by key influencers within FAM, his statement officially makes him the first individual to register an interest in the role.
