The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) is confident of seeing the national contingent earn one medal each for gold, silver and bronze at the Rio Olympics, this August.
Assistant general secretary of OCM, Sieh Kok Chi claims three sports in the form of badminton, track cycling and diving have been earmarked as key avenues to acquire all three medals.
“I’m expecting badminton, track cycling and diving, as these three events stand a chance to get a medal, be it gold, silver or bronze,” he told reporters last week.
As for Malaysia’s maiden gold, he said the nation’s hope rest on the shoulders of Lee Chong Wei as he is currently the country’s best bet, judging by his consistency over the last few months.
“He has the experience after losing two Olympic finals. So I’m sure he’ll know what to do if he does meet Lin Dan in the final again, as he’ll be in great spirits knowing this will be his last chance. The same goes to Azizul as they are both experienced and they know what’s at stake,” said Sieh.
A total of 32 Malaysian athletes will take part in the Rio Olympics from 5 to 21 August.
