Search engine giants, Google today paid tribute to Malaysian football legend, Mokhtar Dahari, who was born on this very date 61 years ago.
Mokhtar, till today, is regarded by many as the greatest Malaysian footballer to have graced the local scene, though he unfortunately passed away in 1991, after a long standing battle with motor neurone disease.
As a mark of respect and tribute, Google have produced a stunning Mokhtar Dahari doodle on the home page of their Malaysian edition of the search engine.
Fondly known as Supermokh, he a huge chunk of his time with Selangor, scoring a total of 177 goals for them throughout his career. He officially retired from football in 1986, before coming out of it to play for the Red Giants in 1987, which ended up being Mokhtar’s last season in Malaysian football.
He was also a pivotal part of the Malaysian side that was regarded as one of the best teams in Asia back in the 1970s, famously scoring a Maradone-esque solo goal against England B, who were under the tutelage of Sir Bobby Robson, back in 1978.
But just four years after hanging up his boots, Mokhtar passed away at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre on 11 July 1991, with reports referring to muscular dystrophy as the cause of his death.
