Kelantan FA goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat’s absence from the national team’s Ocenia Tour has puzzling local football fans, though an official explanation has been finally provided.
Football Association of Malaysia released a statement earlier today to clarify the situation, revealing that Fahmi was prohibited from leaving Malaysia due to issues with his income tax payments.
“Khairul Fahmi could not join the national team squad as the Immigration Department blocked him from doing so at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA2) last Saturday,” Dato’ Hamidin said.
“He was forced to remain in Malaysia in order to settle issues pertaining to his income tax payments. He also assured that he’ll join us for the remainder of the matches, as soon as he sorts his situation out,” he added.
That said, it’s highly likely that Khairul Fahmi – assuming his problem is sorted out – will only be able to join the national squad in time for their final game against Fiji on the 26th of June.
Malaysia’s Ocenia Tour kicked-off with a 2-0 defeat against Papua New Guinea last week. They are scheduled to face New Caledonia on Wednesday, before the final game against Fiji.
